Developing sustainable insulation oil for power transformers via pyrolysis of biomass feedstock
Reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector requires rethinking energy delivery and upgrading grid infrastructure. The UK’s target to generate 50GW of offshore wind energy by 2030 demands extensive improvements to electricity systems, alongside the growing need for clean and reliable power.
Transformers play a key role in distributing electricity efficiently by managing voltage and reducing energy losses. However, they rely on petroleum-based insulating oils, which contribute to carbon emissions and environmental risks due to poor biodegradability and fire hazards. In the UK, transformers are responsible for 4% of emissions in the energy sector. Research into natural alternatives, such as vegetable oils, has identified challenges, including stability issues and environmental concerns like deforestation and biodiversity loss.
This project aims to develop bio-oils from sustainably grown British biomass as a substitute for traditional transformer insulation oils. Through pyrolysis, a process that heats biomass without oxygen to produce valuable products, these bio-oils will be tested as potential replacements for current insulating oils in power transformers.
By reducing emissions and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, this innovation supports the UK’s Net-Zero goals. Additionally, it promotes a circular economy by using local resources, avoiding deforestation, and creating sustainable solutions for agriculture and energy industries.
