Early Career Researcher Forum

Monday 4 November

The Early Career Researcher Forum took place at Chalmers University of Technology on Monday 4 November.

The forum was jointly organised by the Supergen Bioenergy Hub SHARE Chairs, Scott Banks (Aston University), Abdelrahman Zaky (University of Edinburgh) and Samira Garcia Freites (University of Manchester), alongside Line Degn Hansen and Heidi Otsby (Norwegian University of Life Sciences) and Dilip Khatiwada (KTH Royal Institute of Technology).


Fun ice-breakers and networking activities (chaired by Abdel and Scott)

Attendees had the opportunity to meet other early career researchers with common interests ahead of the conference.

Research pitch presentations by ECRs (chaired by Line and Heidi)

Participants gave a one-minute pitch presentation of their ongoing research. The presentations were judged on slide content and delivery by Patricia Thornley and Andrew Welfle from the Supergen Bioenergy Hub. Radziah Wahid from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences won the first prize of a £50 voucher, while  David Emberson from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Eirek Ogner Jasted from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences were both highly commended.

Q&A session with guest speakers 

Guest speakers from the conference shared their career journeys and provided advice for early career researchers in the bioenergy and biofuels fields, providing different perspectives from academia, policy and industry.

Aysha Ahmed from the UK Department for Transport, Keith Simons from SHV Energy and Patricia Thornley from the Supergen Bioenergy Hub gave some great advice including finding a sponsor, volunteering your time, getting a wide range of experience and growing your network.

Site visit

The forum was followed by a site visit to Volvo Trucks.
