Collaborative working between UK and India in bioenergy research project

The Supergen Bioenergy Hub has been awarded funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to carry out a new bioenergy scoping opportunity with India.

The scoping exercise explores UK-India research collaborations through a range of engagement activities and enables the identification of mutually beneficial areas of collaboration and areas where the two countries can work in synergy around net zero technologies.

UKRI has identified bioenergy as an area which has the potential for significant mutual benefit from a UK-India partnership, and in parallel to COP26 discussions around net zero and clean energy transition, climate is one of the pillars of the India-UK 2030 roadmap. Overseen by Director of the Supergen Bioenergy Hub Patricia Thornley, the project ran from January until March this year.

UK-India Online Events

The project has conducted three online events, beginning in February attended by 60 participants from from across academia, industry and policy sectors in the UK, India and other countries. Presentations were given by Dr.Sangita Kasture from DBT, Arina Cosac from UKRI India and Professor Patricia Thornley, Director of the Supergen Bioenergy Hub and the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute at Aston University, gave an overview of the UK bioenergy landscape and an introduction to the scoping work funded by UKRI and 14 Feb UK India Workshop presentation.

Deep Dive Events

A series of Deep Dive events followed on 11 March and 17 March, looking in detail at a range of key themed areas as identified by stakeholders in the UK and India. Managed by UK and India subject leads in the field, participants had the opportunity to take part in discussions around the topic areas to share their projects  in the UK and India, discuss priorities and identify potential research gaps and hear about further opportunities to work together.

Online Launch of Final Report

Following the completion of the Deep Dive workshops, Subject Leads worked with Professor Patricia Thornley and Bhavika Rathi (researcher) to collate all the research and findings from the online events, together with a literature review on the current state of play of bioenergy in the UK and India into a Final Report. An Online Launch Event for the Final Report took place on Wednesday 27 April to showcase the report and all the contributors. You can read all the details of the event here and view the live recording via our Youtube channel.
