Fuelling young minds for a sustainable tomorrow
By Czaneil Gomez, researcher and member of the Supergen SHARE network at Aston University – winner of the GBEP 2024 Youth Award
I was inspired to create this comic piece from my experience of attending the GBEP-YUNGA (Global Bioenergy Partnership – Youth and United Nations Global Alliance) event organised by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in June last year. It was a gathering that brought together young minds from across the globe to learn, share, and be empowered about the pressing issues of climate change, sustainability, and the role of youth in shaping a better future.
Through this illustration, I wanted to share the bioenergy, insights, and inspiration I felt during the event in a way that is fun, relatable, and engaging. It is not just a recap — it’s a story meant to spark reflection and a call for action!
At the heart of my experience was the message that every choice we make matters. Whether it’s about the energy we use, the food we consume, or the way we travel, our decisions carry an impact — and that impact can be either positive or negative for our planet.
In the comic, I also introduce the idea of Global Bioenergy Stories — interactive and creative narratives that help make sense of the complex world of sustainable energy. By weaving bioenergy into everyday contexts, these stories highlight how we can play a meaningful role in the energy transition and in choosing solutions that are truly sustainable — for people, for nature, and for future generations.
Ultimately, this comic is a call to awareness and action. It’s about realising that the future is not a distant reality — it’s something we are already shaping today. And as the next generation of decision-makers, we all have a part to play.
Let’s be informed. Let’s be inspired. And most importantly — let’s choose wisely.
