Growing the Biofuel from Waste Sector to meet UK Transport Targets

Supergen Researchers Andrew Welfle (University of Manchester), Stuart Wagland (Cranfield University), Katie Chong and Jai Lad (Aston University) led a workshop at European Bioenergy Research Institute in Birmingham, that questioned how the UK could grow its biofuel from waste sector to meet future transport energy targets.

Funded jointly by the Supergen Bioenergy Hub and the UK Department for Transport, the workshop brought together industry, government and academic stakeholders to present new research:

Analysing current and future potential availability of UK waste resources for the biofuel sector.
Assessing the chemical and physical characteristics of UK wastes.
Identifying potential processing and pre-treatment pathways for different wastes
Analysing the viability of different bioenergy conversion pathways that may be used to produce the variety of fuels needed by the future UK transport sector.

Stakeholders undertook a series of group activities and discussions were captured and analysed to be reported back the Department for Transport, to evaluate the opportunities, limits and constraints of the UK biofuel from waste sector.
