Highlights from workshop on advancing low-emission hydrogen production
On 10 June, we hosted a successful Energy Research Accelerator (ERA)-funded workshop titled ‘Advancing Low-Emission Hydrogen Production through Biomass Gasification’ at the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI), Aston University. Organised by Dr Fabian Ejim and Dr Scott Banks, the event brought together academics, ECRs, industry professionals and policymakers to explore the future of sustainable hydrogen.
Prof. Patricia Thornley and Dr Scott Banks kicked off with an overview of Supergen, ERA, and EBRI’s biomass gasification work. This was followed by a keynote from Debra Jones of Innovate UK, who presented exciting developments in sustainable aviation fuel. Dr Katie Chong and Dr Will Bowling from Energy Systems Catapult shared their collaborative work on accelerating the hydrogen economy. Dr Paula Blanco-Sanchez from the Environment Agency UK discussed the regulatory landscape and its implications for sustainable hydrogen projects. Dr Simon George and Dr Sharon George of NovaSci Ltd introduced their innovative Digital Twin VR demonstration, and Elizabeth Simon of Hydrogen Safe offered a compelling perspective on hydrogen safety and a skills framework. Dr Jude Onwudili (EBRI Director) delivered insightful closing remarks, reinforcing EBRI’s leadership in bioenergy research.
Poster competition winners include Siqi Xu, Cranfield University (1st prize) and Srigan Moharir, Aston University (2nd prize).
The day closed with a guided tour of EBRI’s pilot plant and lab facilities.
Huge thanks to all speakers, attendees and supporters who made this event a success!
