Background
In recent weeks we have seen the devastating power of extreme weather events in America and the Carribean and scientists tell us that continuing to emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere will increase the likelihood and severity of such events in future. So most people agree that we urgently need to decarbonize our energy system, our country and our planet – but how?
Bioenergy (energy from plants and trees) can deliver greenhouse gas reductions in the energy, manufacturing and agricultural sectors when it is transformed into liquid biofuels, electricity and heat. In addition, biomass resources are globally spread so energy can be provided where-ever suitable land exists. But there is no such thing as a free lunch and if we want energy (and goods) it will have an impact: on the planet, on prosperity and on people. So it is important that we stop to think about the impacts of different low carbon options for different demands and make informed choices.
This event is aimed at anyone with an interest in energy and climate change. It brings together experts from academia, industry and policy to explore the role that bioenergy can play in our future energy system, answering your questions about the real greenhouse gas impacts of bioenergy, how much it costs, whether there is enough land and what the impacts on biodiversity might be.
Our speakers include:
Prof. Patricia Thornley – Professor of sustainable energy systems at Aston University and director of the Supergen bioenergy hub
Dr. Chris Manson-Whitton – Technical Director of Progressive Energy, a company involved in development of new bioenergy projects
Mr. Neil Harrison – Director of re:heat and Vice Chairman of the Wood Heat Association
Jenny Hill – Climate Change Committee
Julia Tomei – University College, London
The event will be chaired by Duncan Eggar and will commence with a brief statement by each of our speakers, but the bulk of the session will be spent with panellists answering questions from the attendees.
