Supergen bioenergy hub response to the call for evidence on the future policy framework for biomethane production
Biomethane will have an important role to play in decarbonisation and the transition to net zero. It is already being used in the UK as an alternative to fossil fuels, and is directly injected into the gas grid to reduce our reliance on natural gas. Beyond this, biomethane has many potential applications in sectors ranging from heat to transport, and in the future, there is also the potential to link biomethane systems with negative emissions through integration with carbon capture and storage.
The UK’s plans for the Net Zero transition demand greater levels of biomethane production moving forwards, but the current policy mechanisms that support biomethane production and use are due to end in the coming years.
Between February and April 2024 the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero ran a call for evidence, with the aim of gathering information to support the development of future policy frameworks for biomethane.
The Supergen Bioenergy Hub submitted a response to this call for evidence, focusing on key areas relevant to our expertise, in particular: priority applications for biomethane, feedstock sustainability assessment and governance, and fugitive emissions from biomethane production.
