Development of biochar-based functional materials: Advancing a sustainable platform for carbon applications

Biochar is a carbon-rich material formed by heating organic feedstock with limited oxygen. This process called thermal decomposition, can use a variety of organise wastes, such as agricultural wastes and municipal solid waste. Biochar has a porous structure and a large surface area, making it highly effective in various applications. Biochar-based functional materials provide many environmental, agricultural, industrial, and economic benefits. In addition, their multifunctionality makes them extremely valuable in solving some of the most serious emerging global problems, such as environmental pollution, energy storage, and climate change.

This project focuses on creating innovative, eco-friendly materials using biochar. By improving how biochar interacts with plastics, the project aims to develop strong, durable materials that could replace traditional ones like carbon black. These new materials will be tested for strength, heat resistance, and environmental impact, helping to promote sustainable practices and reduce waste. The project will also assess the entire lifecycle of these materials to ensure they are a greener alternative.
